This is the way
As I watched the final episode of The Mandalorian Season 3 (don’t worry, I won’t give away any spoilers) it reminded me of the current crisis in tech: even though you may lose your job (flash to Bo-Katan losing her queendom), or have a major setback like your division is reorg’d/merged with any org and your no longer working on what you find most interesting, like the folks in the New Republic Amnesty Program, there’s hope and life outside of work. Remember, you are not your job. Even though you spend most of your life at work, it does not define you. Not today, not tomorrow, not ever. So as I lay reflecting on why Mando went back to bounty hunting and decided to help clean up the galaxy, I decided to go back to doing two things that I thoroughly enjoy: building AI and sharing it with folks. I strayed away from both of those things for a bit too long. Time to get back in the game.
Why this? Why now?
There’s no better time. I am not my job. Coming to that realization led me to ask, then what am I? What gets me up in the morning? The answer for me is simple and it’s something that I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid watching the very movies upon which this post is based: I want to build C-3PO. I want to build Data. I want to build the Robot from Lost in Space. And furthermore, I want to share it and let others build upon it. And, yeah, Substack looked like place that can help build community without gatekeeping (ahem, I’m looking at you Medium). So why not.
It’s all about community
For what it’s worth, I hope I can reach anyone and everyone that will listen. But really, this is a place for folks to learn about what I learn about and build. It’s like my R&D notes, but with working, production ready code. It’s for folks that want to train LLMs from scratch, or build agents to solve escape rooms in a simulated world, or deploy their models trained with synthetic data to real AMR platforms, or even for people that just want to make themselves look like Wonder Woman without having a degree in photoshop (who doesn’t want to look like Wonder Woman?). Plus, with Twitter being a dumpster fire and getting to the point that it’s unusable, there should be other ways of staying in tune with the pulse of the AI/ML community. What better way than as a contributor?
So sign up, will ya?
I’m not sure how often I’ll be posting, or what, exactly, I’ll be posting. Might be a once a month newsletter, or a tutorial on something that I find interesting and want to learn about (best way to learn something is to teach it), or a rant on the latest shit show happening in the AI community, or all of the above. So signup if you want to tag along for the ride.
